The BJP government increased the budget for the agriculture and fisheries sector to Rs 21,605 crore in the state budget for 2023-24 presented on Friday.

The allocation is nearly three times more than the Rs 7,737 crore announced for the sector in the last budget. Together with allocations to relevant departments such as water resources and energy.

The total comes to Rs 42,594 crore, an official release said, accounting for nearly 14 percent of the state's Rs 3.01 lakh crore budget for the next fiscal.

Presenting the budget, Finance Minister Kanu Desai said, the government has taken several initiatives to increase capital investment in agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries and increase the availability of credit.

The minister also allocated a subsidy of Rs 400 crore to farmers for installing solar fencing and barbed wire fencing around agricultural fields to protect crops from damage by wild animals.

Farmer leaders said that there are many welcome initiatives in the budget but nothing concrete to keep farming an attractive profession. The farmers had high hopes for the budget of the Gujarat government, on which the government is not living up to its standards.
